Home Furniture 365 - Art or Object?
When pieces of home furniture are designed to leap from being utilitarian objects to a highly valued art object, something unexpected and rather amusing can happen.
Visitors to the twenty third Fringe Furniture event, in Melbourne Museum, Australia, will wonder at what point during its design does an object move from being merely useful to a more purely aesthetic place?
From its spartan beginnings at the Fitzroy Town Hall twenty three years ago, the Fringe Furniture show has moved on (since 2003) to much finer digs at the Melbourne Museum, where contemporary Australian design has garnered strong support and a superb venue to showcase. It seems fitting having cutting-edge furniture design there among the realms of science, history and human endeavor, for it puts furniture in a broader context of significant cultural expression.
